In most patients there is no identifiable cause of myeloma. In a very small number of cases there may be risk factors such as toxic chemicals, petroleum based products, pesticides etc. Other risk factors include:
- Exposure to viruses
- Exposure to radiation – atomic radiation, radiotherapy.
- Weak immune system – from other illnesses.
